Do you need to use SQL Mail or will an alternative work for you?
The alternative is XPSMTP
http://www.sqldev.net/xp/xpsmtp.htm
If you need SQL Mail, you need to log in to the SQL Server box as the
Windows user that the SQL Server services are running under. You need to
set up the mail profile as that user in order for SQL Server to be able to
see the profile.
