There is infact a solution to this problem given in the
post named "VB6 SP6 problem with SQL 2000 Enterprise
Manager" in the newsgroup microsoft.public.vb.bugs. I'll
just copy-paste it here.

Quoting Rob Janssen:
--------------------

I had some similar problems and contacted MS about it.
They advised me to
use the MDT2DF.dll file from SP5.

Here's how you do it:
(You might need winzip to extract files/cabs)

* Extract SP5.
* In the extracted folder you'll find VS6sp53.cab
* Extract MDT2DF.dll from this cab to any location
* Go to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft
Shared\MSDesigners98
* Rename MDT2DF.dll to MDT2DF_Backup.dll or something
* Copy the extracted MDT2DF.dll to this directory

This might solve your problems (and is a relatively easy
fix).

----------------
End quote

This helped me a whole lot. Please try it out!
