registry error setting ConfigurationState to SQL_Browser_Redist

I'm trying to install SQL Server 2008 on my corporate Windows XP professional
machine. The installation is failing without much of a descriptive message.
Last year I ran into similar trouble installing SQL Server 2008 and this
newsgroup fixed my problem (had to grant permissions on some registry item).
This year my machine's been replaced and I have a new problem. I'm hoping
you guys can help me again.
