transfering database contents

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

Using sqlexpress, how do I move my membership database from one server to the development server? The two servers are on the same intranet.

Here's what I tried:

Backup database from production server, then on development server tried to restore the backup. No can do: since it sees the backup is from another server.

On development server, tried to import from the production server. But it can't seem to connect, even though named pipes are enabled on both servers, and I am using the same account name on both servers.

What do you recommend as a proceedure to get the date transferred?
