Geoff,
Thanks for the reply.
Unused instances of what? I have no unused instances of SQL Server. My
client has a (still in use) version of SQL 2000 Developer. There are no
other SQL instances on my machine and I'm not trying to install any. I need
SQL 2000 for development until our upgrade process is complete and I need the
management tools in order to do the upgrade. Once I have upgraded all my
prodcution databases, I will want to install 2008 Developer or Express on my
own PC for development and testing, but until that time I only need the
management tools.

Uninstall every unused instance..
Do not uninstall any possibly shred component.
Disk space for unused softweare is cheap. Rebuilding systems gets expensive.

I'm trying to install the 2008 management tools on my desktop to manage a
2008 server installation. When I install from my MSDN media or our main
server install media I get an error. The errror log leads me to an error
page with the following message "A network error occurred while attempting
to
read from the file '%.*ls'.". It describes the fault as being from and
existing SQL Native Client install. I have uninstalled and re-run.
Further
investigation in the logs shows that the install I was doing just
installed
the Native Client successfully.
I'm on XPSP2 with VS 2005 and SQL 2000 developer installed (we're
migrating
from 2000 to 2008). Any ideas or suggestions much appreciated!
Thanks,
Phil
