Registry key not found during installation

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

I tried to install a second instance of SQL Server 2008 Developer edition. It
failed so I removed it and tried again. That failed so I removed SQL Server
2008 completely.

Now when I try to install the default instance I get error "The registry key
SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\RsFx0102\InstancesShares is missing" during
"Running post-Windows Installer configuration timing actions".

I am installing it in Windows Vista Business 32 bit SP1 as a domain
administrator.

Any suggestions please?
