Install of sql server 2008 express with advanced services fails without specific error

I tried to do an install of sql server 2008 express with advanced services
earlier this morning. I had sql server 2005 express sp2 installed before now
and it ran without any problems. It would refuse to install a security
update from windows update though.
When I tried the 2008 express install, I tried to update from 2005 to 2008
but kept getting the sql server 2008 rules (rule = sql server 2005 express
tools failed) notice right before the update. I then aborted the update and
tried to install a side by side instance of 2008 and 2005. I had 2 instances
of sql server 2005 running at the time (sqlexpress and mssmlbiz). I tried
calling the 2008 instance sqlexpress2008 and it failed to install because of
sql server 2008 install rules (sql server 2005 express tools failed) again.
I attempted to uninstall the 2005 express tools but couldn't find them
anywhere. I uninstalled some 2005 satelite programs like publishing wizard
1.3 and backwards compatibility toolkit and reran the rules checker again to
find out it failed the same check again.
I canceled all the way out of the install for sql server 2008, tried to
uninstall sql server 2005 to find out it failed to uninstall itself. An
article in the KB website told how to manually uninstall it if for some
reason add/remove programs failed to uninstall. This failed as well and I
had to resort to using brute force to get it out. I ended up having to
shutdown all instances/services related to server 2005, renaming the sql
server folder in program files, deleting it and deleting the registry keys
from the registry. I then restarted and tried to run the sql server 2008
installer again. This time it worked until the very end. At this point, I
get an error that says " has no permissions to do the requested task, or
user doesn't exist.". I clicked the ok button and it tried to finish. It
told me I had to restart my computer so I did just that. When I tried to
connect with sql server management studio basic, I got the following
message: "Login for user andy\andy failed. sql server message (login failed,
sql server, error 18456)". I looked to see if the instances were installed
and running in control pannel, administration>services (I moved the services
from performance to administration). When I got there, I found the 2 sql
server 2005 instances disabled and not running as well as the sql server
2008 instance that wasn't running. I started it and tried again to login
with sql server management studio and got the same error (18456). I tried to
look in the errorlog but access was denied (I am using an administrator
account to do all of this). I looked at a file called error.4 and saw some
messages about -f flag being a problem and some services are disabled
because of single user mode. I saw nothing about failed installs or failed
logins. Any way to fix any of this? I am using XP home sp3 and visual studio
2008 sp1.
