EKREM,
That is exactly what happened. When i did the install, I was using a
different logon Account instead of Alex-PC\Test. I be doing most development
work on this Account so I would like to use that. I am not sure how to
perform the steps you mentioned. Should I uninstall my installation and log
on to the test account and reinstall.
Thanks

Probably you did not install your SQL Server 2008 Instance under this.
("Test") Windows User Account and probably you did not add this user to the
"SQL Server System Administrators" list during SQL Server 2008 Setup. So,
you can't connect to your SQL Server 2008 instance using this user's Windows
account.
To accomplish this, connect to your SQL Server instance under a Windows
account which was added to the SQL Server System Administrators list by you
during installation. Then create a Login for this Windows user ("Test") or
for a Windows Group which includes this Windows user account.
Note:
The list I'm talking about is in the SQL Server 2008 Setup's: Database
Engine Configuration pane's Account Provisioning tab.

Thanks for response. I went ahead and installed SQL 2008 Dveloper edition.
The install completed successfully. When i open Management Studio, I get
this
message Login failed for user Alex-PC\TEst;(SQL Server error:18456)
Any ideas

Hi Ekrem,
Yes, I misunderstood the original problem. Please re-activate your

and state that the documentation is wrong in this area. That way the bug
will get assigned to the writer.

Hello Gail,
I think you did not follow this thread from the first message. The
problem
with the System Requirements is that, on the Operating System
Requirements
list of SQL Server 2008 Enterprise Edition (at least the x86's, because
my
test was on this architecture), Client Operating Systems (XP, Vista)
are
not listed. However, Enterprise Edition of SQL Server 2008 can be
installed on Client OSs.
If you take a look at my first port under this thread, you'll see that
an
MS guy from Connect confirms this.

I just verified that the updated (August 2008) Books Online topics are
now
on MSDN. So http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143506.aspx
has
the corrected OS information.

Yes, it looks like the MSDN topics haven't been updated yet, but that
should be happening soon (the next day or so I believe). The folks
that
can confirm this are not in the office today, but I'll repost when I
can get some more concrete information from them.

Hi Gail,
Yep, I was talking about you =) It's nice to see you around.
However, I've checked out this link:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143506.aspx and I still
see
it's wrong. Besides, I'm not sure if you were talking about this
link
when
you were saying "corrected". But as you know, as everybody do not
download
BOL's offline version, this link is the most popular thing to check
for
system requirements. I hope it's going to be corrected ASAP so that
people
would not be confused.

Wrong gender, but I'll reply anyway :>) The topic has been

is available in the most recent update to SQL Server 2008 Books

Hi Charles,
I believe that there's something wrong with the mentioned
documentation.
After SQL Server 2008 RTM was released, I tested it installing on
a
Client
OS and the result is: you can install SQL Server 2008 Enterprise
Edition
on Client OSs (XP\Vista). As this was not something usual, we
discussed
about this in "public.sqlserver.tools" NG under "Replace SSMS
2005
with
SSMS 2008" topic. I reported this in Connect and here's the
answer:
By Peter Saddow [Microsoft]:
Thanks for contacting us. For SQL Server 2008, we did not
implement
rules
to
prevent you from installing an higher-level SQL editions on lower
level OS
editions, such as SQL ENT on a client OS.

There was an MS guy around here who works about documentation, I
hope he
realizes our discussions about this mistake and take necessary

Hi Alex,
Thank you for using Microsoft MSDN Managed Newsgroup. My name is
Charles
and I will assist you on this issue.
Based on your description, I understand that you would like to
know
if
your laptop OS conditions satisfy the installation requirements
of
SQL
Server 2008 Enterprise Edition.
If I have misunderstood, please let me know.
For Windows Vista system, you can only install SQL Server 2008
Developer
Edition or Express Edition or Enterprise Evaluation Edition. It
does not
support SQL Server 2008 Enterprise Edition.
For more information, you can refer to this article:
Hardware and Software Requirements for Installing SQL Server
2008
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143506.aspx
To install SQL Server 2008 Enterprise Edition, you need to
install
Windows Server 2003 or 2008. You can also find the list of
supported OS
in the above article.
Hope this helps. If you have any other questions or concerns,
please feel
free to let me know.
Best regards,
Charles Wang
