Hi Jason,
I understand that you could not install BIDS due to higher version error message after you installed SQL Server 2005 SP2 with cumulative 7 update.
If I have misunderstood, please let me know.
This issue is often caused by the fact that your client tools had been upgraded to the latest version. BIDS cannot be separately installed if you had installed other client tools. To install it, you
must first uninstall the existing client tools and then re-install the client tools including BIDS. Please refer to the following steps:
1. Open Add or Remove Programs, select Microsoft SQL Server 2005, click Remove;
2. In the pop-up window, ensure that you only check "Workstation Components" from "Remove SQL Server 2005 common components" list, and then click Next and click Finish.
3. Open your SQL Server 2005 setup program from your setup CD, follow the setup wizard and only choose the Workstation Components to install.
4. After the installation finished, re-run your SQL Server 2005 SP2 to only apply the hotfixes on the Workstation Components.
Hope this helps. If you have any other questions or concerns, please feel free to let me know.
Best regards,
Charles Wang

Note: The MSDN Managed Newsgroup support offering is for
non-urgent issues where an initial response from the community
or a Microsoft Support Engineer within 1 business day is acceptable.
Please note that each follow up response may take approximately
2 business days as the support professional working with you may
need further investigation to reach the most efficient resolution.
The offering is not appropriate for situations
that require urgent, real-time or phone-based interactions or complex
project analysis and dump analysis issues. Issues of this nature are best
handled working with a dedicated Microsoft Support Engineer by
contacting Microsoft Customer Support Services (CSS) at
