Hello gal,
I think, first you should ensure you have an installed SQL Server instance on your machine. For this purpose, you may want to go to the Control Panel -> Programs & Features and check out for Microsoft SQL Server 2005. Click on it and then click the Uninstall button and a window pops up. There, you'll see your installed SQL Server 2005 instances. If you can see any, then you'll ensure that you have an installed SQL Server 2005 instance.
Then, go to Start\Programs\Microsoft SQL Server 2005\Configuration Tools\SQL Server Configuration Manager. There, you'll find a SQL Server 2005 Services node. Ensure that your SQL Server services are up and running (especially the Database Engine).
If your instance is a named instance, then its name is going to be something like this: "SQL Server (<your_instance_name>)" if it's a default intance, then it's gonna be like: SQL Server (MSSQLSERVER).
If you are sure that you have an installed SQL Server instance and if you can verify that it's up and running, then open up SSMS and type its name in the Server Name edit box and try to connect.
