Thank you for your detailed response.
I noticed that you said:
for explicit permissions, "myDomain\MyUser" is only granted "Connect SQL", and this is granted by "sa".
However you also said:
2008: "myDomain\MyUser" is also in the "sysadmin" server role;
May you let me know why you granted "CONNECT SQL" here since you had asigned the fixed server role sysadmin to your domain user?
In my former test, I simply added my domain user account as a sysadmin in both SQL Server 2005 and 2008 instance, and they all worked fine when they were disconnected from the domain.
Also the domain name listed in my SQL Server 2008 Management Studio was in upper case like "MYDOMAIN\myuser". Could you please let me know you SQL Server 2008 version, CTP or RTM?
My SQL Server 2008 was Enterprise Edition RTM with the version 10.0.1600.
