Think of files and filegroups not just in terms of performance but also in terms of availability and disaster recovery. If you have a critical object, you might want to split that in multiple files spread across multiple disks and stored in multiple filegroups. Imagine a table that is spread across multiple files in multiple disks assigned to multiple filegroups. You will have the advantage of increased I/O performance plus the availability provided by filegroups

I Have a database that has 120G imported from other database. Now I am.
planning to setup this databse. I want to use more file groups. Except file
groups, I wonder which is better if I use one file or more files in one file
group to handle it. e.g. 100g, do you think if I use one file for 100g or 5
files and each is 20g?
Thanks.
