Greetings all,

I am attempting to get SQL Server 2005 Express running on a freshly
installed Windows Server 2003 Small Business Server machine.

I wiped this machine and installed 2003 Small Business Server. After
installing the .NET 2.0 Framework I uninstalled most of the 2003 SBS
programs and servers. We really only need this machine as a Web Server
for a handful of sites that use an SQL Server back end.

I have since tried to install 2005 Express (Service Pack 2) about a
dozen times. No matter what I do the errors are the same. During the
"Configuring Database Services" stage of the install I get an error
complaining:

SQL Server failed during server configuration. Login failed, user
'sa'.

The entire ERRORLOG of my latest installation is as follows:

I get this same error telling the installer application to allow only
Windows Authentication or Mixed Mode Authentication.

I don't know if there are any vestigial left overs from the SharePoint
install (that I believe was using MSDE?). There is nothing SharePoint
or MSDE related in Add/Remove programs.

After failing, I have been removing all SQL Server references via Add/
Remove Programs. I have been going into the registry and removing the
SQL Server entries under HKLM\Software\Microsoft. I have cleared out
the contents of \Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\.

I can do anything on this machine including re-installing SBS 2003 if
necessary.

Recommendations?

Thanks so much!

Matt
