The recommended way is to apply the updates to a similiar SQL Server instance in a test environment prior updating your production SQL Server instance.
After ensuring you don't face problems with the updated version in your test environment, then you can apply the updates to your production SQL Server instance.
Automatic updating is not recommended not only because of this but also updating could cause a restart of the computer or SQL Server services and this could cause unexpected interruptions that you would not want to experience. It's better to perform this action manually and take the control of the server yourself.
