Re: installation

Tech Tip: Click here to run a free scan for Windows Errors and optimize PC performance

You said that you tried to uninstall and delete SQL stuff. Regarding to this comment I conclude that you might have been deleted some stuff manually and that's why you can't use add\remove programs to remove SQL Server out of your system now.

If you Manually Uninstalling SQL Server document did not work for you then you should uninstall and reinstall your OS I'm afraid.

If you are going to be using SQL Server Express not seriously, only for exploring purposes or something, then you can set up a Virtual Machine environment and use your SQL Server on that virtual machine? Just an alternative if it works for you.

If non of my suggestions work for you then I hope someone else has a better idea.

Hello Ekrem , thank you for your reply and your help

the old SQL 2005 Express edition is still there - which doesn't work -
I cannot uninstall it and cannot install a new one .
And, so far, I am not ready to install a new Windows XP !!!

You're right; it seems like several modules are missing.
I'd better give you some details of what happened
1- I downloaded a SQL 2005 Express edition from a Microsoft site, one year ago
2- It never worked properly; I could not use it;
I had some virus problems and had to reinstall Windows XP Pack 2;
I started to uninstall and delete everything related to sql; I could not
uninstall everything
3- Now, several months later, I tried again: first, uninstall the old
version and then , install the latest
4- I used the add/remove program to uninstall; it looks for some modules
like sqlsupport.msi that it can't find and I am asked to download and install
them from the original source where I got my first sql from (Microsoft
downloading site); that is precisely what I am trying to do.
I have to uninstall before installing; and install before unistalling !
So, I'm locked in a vicious circle ! MS nightmare ?

5- I tried everything you said: add/remove programs and manual removing
using GUID numbers and commands like described in
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa337087.aspx
also Window installer cleanup which did not help much

6- Still the same.

Thanks a lot for any further help

Hello,

I do not think you can find that file seperately and I don't know what
happened that file on your system however others also may have been lost
somehow... I think you better download the SQL Server 2005 Express Edition
from the following link if you have any chance:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=220549b5-0b07-4448-8848-dcc397514b41

And if you want to remove your SQL Server 2005 Instance from your system try
Add\Remove Programs. If it does not work, then try removing SQL Server from
your system manually using the following guide:
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa337087.aspx
