Re: Installing IIS

In my years of working with IIS, yours is the first experience I've come
across where installing IIS has been a problem. This is not the headache
that you claim it to be.

You are complaining about a component that is an optional part of the
software (and therefore not installed by default) requiring access to the
software media so that the installation files can be located. There is no
pain or suffereing here. You can't expect to install something without
access to the place where the software installation files are located.

The fact that you don't have the original installation software is more your
fault than Microsoft's. It is true that most pc's sold these days don't
automatically come with the original installation media. But, ususally the
software IS STILL PROVIDED on a backup or restoration drive within the PC.

Most hardward vendors sell pc's with the option to purchase it with the
original software media (CD/DVD) included in the sale (usually for a nominal
fee like $5 or $10) for those users who want the extra peace of mind of
having something tangible to work from. The first thing I do with a pc when
I buy it is completely re-format the hard drive and then I reinstall just
the software I want. Of course, I'm going to need the actual CD/DVD to be
able to do this, which is why I spend the extra $5 to get the actual
software media.

You go on to say that even with the disks people still have trouble getting
it installed. What people? This is a quick and painless installation that
takes under 10 minutes to do.

I'm trying to install the IIS windows component. Has anybody else
experienced pain and suffering trying to get this installed? Evidently
the win xp pro disc install disc is needed, along with the xp pro SP2
disc - which I don't have. Surprisingly, many people who use XP don't
have the discs! And even WITH the discs people have trouble getting IIS
to install. This seems like a major scandal. Is there some way to get
this supposedly "built-in" component of win xp pro without having to shell
out hundreds and hundreds of dollars for discs that can't even be bought?
I mean, come on.
