Hi,
Actually you do not need a license for the database server running the
mirror databases.
But if you use the database server for something else like creating a
database snapshot on the mirror database you will need a license.
See more details here:

Hope this helps,

Because it's not something like a SQL Server Failover Cluster' s
Active\Passive thing.
In database mirroring, second node' s (which holds the mirror database) SQL
Server services must be running actively. So this means it's being used
actively. So it needs license.
In a two node cluster, if one SQL Server node is running and the second node
is waiting in a standby mode for a failover then you do not need another
license for the passive node. Because it does not work concurrently.
However, in Database Mirroring, the second SQL Server service should be
running on the second server itself to keep Database Mirroring up.
However, I searched Google and could not find a document about this which
proves my opinion nor yours. You can ask to a local authorized software
license vendor.

Hi,
i've read that if you use the second instance of SQL Server 2005 as DB
mirror only you don't need a second licence to run it. Is this correct?
Eventually, to implement a 2-node DB mirror, what I need is:
2 Windows Server 2003 Std
1 SQL Server 2005 Std
Is this correct?
Many thanks
