Thanks for your help
The message I received was that there were "known compatibilty problems with Vista and SQL 2005". The three line message offered me a link which took me to the following URL http://www.microsoft.com/sql/howtobuy/windowsvistasupport.mspx
The preliminary part of the article is given below

Overview
This document describes the support for Microsoft SQL Server 2005 on Microsoft Windows Vista and Microsoft Windows Server 2008.

Installation Requirements
All editions of SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2 (SP2) can be run on Windows Vista RTM, SP1 Beta or Windows Server 2008 RC0. For Vista SP1 Beta and Windows Server 2008, SQL Server 2005 SP2 is not supported in production environments. We recommend that you run SQL Server 2005 SP2 on Windows Server 2008 and Vista SP1 Beta only in test environments. You must first install the full release version of SQL Server 2005 before you can apply SP2.
For more information about installing SQL Server Express SP2, see the SQL Server 2005 Express Edition SP2 Readme.
Note: SQL Server 2005 Express Edition SP1 can be installed on Windows Vista but has known issues with User Access Control. Service Pack 2 is the recommended patch level for Windows Vista support. SQL Server 2005 Express Edition (SQL Server Express) SP2 can be used to install a new instance of SQL Server Express SP2.

I've been using all editions of SQL Server 2005 (except for Enterprise Edition because this edition can not be installed on Vista, XP etc.) on my Windows Vista Business and I've not met any problem yet. There was not SP2 when I installed SQL Server 2005 DE on my Vista Business and it worked good.
So I believe it will not arise any problem in Vista Ultimate as well.
However, you can not install SQL Server on a Vista Starter Edition.
Can you tell me what error message do you get exactly?

I have beenlooking at installing the above product in Vista for the first time. I am warned of known compatibility issues, which I find amazing after all this time.
I found a knowledte base article which said SQL2005 it would run with Service Pack 2 on Vista equipped with SP1 Beta, if not in production mode.
I am not one of the priviledged testers of Vista SP Beta 1. Can some one advise my what I have to do to get SQL to run. Or do I wait till the next year for the release of SP1.
