RE: MS SQL Server Management Studio - Import and Export Settings

Dear Bob,

Thank you for posting here.

From the problem description of the post you submitted, my understanding
is: the error message saying that "CurrentSettings-date.vsettings" file
cannot be found always appears when trying to open the Microsoft SQL Server
Management Studio. If I have misunderstood about your concern, feel free to
let me know.

The following path contains the automatically saved settings file named
"CurrentSettings-<Date>.vssettings":

C:\Documents and Settings\<Username> \My Documents\SQL Server Management
Studio\Settings

Based on my research, if the Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio cannot
locate this file, such error message will appear.

The information of the location of this file is stored in the Registry.
Thus, we can refer to the following steps to manually verify the registry
information:

NOTE: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may
require you to reinstall Windows. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems
resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use
Registry Editor at your own risk.

256986 Description of the Microsoft Windows Registry
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=256986

1. Click Start, click Run, type REGEDIT, and click OK.
2. In Registry Editor, use the (+) icons in the left pane to reach the
following registry branch:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL
Server\90\Tools\Shell\Profile

3. Highlight the branch Windows in the left pane.
4. In the right frame we will see the key AutoSaveFile. Double click the
key.

NOTE: It is always recommended that we backup the registry before changing
any value in it.

5. Change the value to the following value and click OK.

%vsspv_visualstudio_dir%\Settings\CurrentSettings-<Date>.vssettings

NOTE: Please change the filename "CurrentSettings-<Date>.vssettings"
accordingly.

6. Launch the SQL Server Management Studio and then check if this error
message still appears.

Please let me know the results at your earliest convenience. If anything is
unclear in my post, please don't hesitate to let me know and I will be glad
to help. Thank you for your efforts and time.

Have a nice day!

| Hi,
|
| Every time I start the "Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio", I get a
| warning that my "CurrentSettings-date.vsettings" file cannot be found.
The
| message goes on to say "You can change this file on the 'Import and
Export
| Settings' Tools Options page".
|
| Although I can find an 'Import and Export Settings' Tools Options page in
my
| working "Microsoft Visual Studio 2005", I can' find this in the failing
| "Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio".
|
| Where is this setting? thanks!
