Cannot upgrade a licensed sql2000 to a MSDN 2005

A year ago I installed licensed copy of sql2000 (sp3), installed Developer
Express, and eventually MSDN 2005 developer or standard edition (somehow).
However I was not able to get sql server 2005 sp2 to get installed, so I
decided to start from scratch.
I uninstalled everything (with some problems) and eventually scrubbed
c:\Program Files and the various registry entries.

I still could not install sql server 2005 (MSDN standard edition using the
DVD) - I keep getting messages like below.
I can however install sql2000 (&sp3 &s p4), but I when I try to upgrade it I
get the same errors.

I've run the sql server 2005 upgrade advisor, which only produces warnings &
directs me to a number of minefields
(all which I can ignore due the only thing being installed is a pure
installation).

I've tried installing IIS & removing IE7, but neither seemed to help


1) Is the transaction from one license to a MSDN license a problem?

2) Is there log file that tells me *what* minimum hardware requirement I'm
missing?
(I have 2G of ram & a 1.72G Pentitum M)

3) I've tried to allow various instructions to really clean all instances of
ms/sql from my machine.
(but I'm not conviced I've really totally cleansed it)
