Okay - I was finally able to get SP2 installed. Apparently, something was
corrupted with the Windows Installer information for SQL Server 2005 as I
was unable to even uninstall SQL Server 2005 itself via the Add/Remove
programs control panel without getting the "The installation source for this
product is not available. Verify that the source exists and that you can
access it." error. I even tried re-installing SQL SErver 2005 from the
initial setup file, but that was giving me the same error as the SP2 setup
with the inability to install the SQL Server Setup Support files.
I ended up having to get the Windows Installer Cleanup utility
(http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/290301/en-us) to clear out
the install information
I first tried just deleting the SQL Setup Support Files with the installer
cleanup utilty and then reinstalling them with the SQL Server 2005
installer. It was able to successfully re-install the SQL Setup Support
files. Then I ran the SP2 install again and it got past the Setup Suppot
files step, but then it just failed on most of the rest of the components.
I then again tried to reinstall SQL Server 2005 over what was already there,
but that woudlnt' work either as it too was failing to re-install the
installed database components. The only way to get it to work successfully
completely was to run the Windows Installer Cleanup utility and remove all
of the SQL Server 2005 installed components from the Windows INstaller
database. I then reinstalled SQL Server 2005 from the original RTM install
disk and then was able to apply SP2 successfully. On the plus side, all of
my databases were still online and intact after this process (although it's
probably a good idea to back them up or at least copy the mdf files
somewhere safe after SQL Server is shut down).
So, to summarize, if you are having the exact same problem with SP2 being
unable to install the SQL Setup Support Files, the following should fix
things and let you get your SQL SErver instance upgraded to SP2:
1. Download and run the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility and delete the SQL
Setup Support Files and all SQL Server 2005 installed componenents from the
WIndows Installer database
2. Re-install SQL Server 2005 from the initial setup disk
3. Run the SP2 setup utility.
