R3i:
I too get that similar configuraiton login error during installation, and
then the installation fails ( and thus am unable to apply the SP2 and thus
the catch-22).
How did you manage to work around that?
Thanks for any help.

Finally resolved the problem - it was a firewall issue with local loopback.

Thanks for the quick reply.
Following your advice, I looked at the information on this page
http://www.microsoft.com/sql/howtobuy/windowsvistasupport.mspx
It states "You must first install the full release version of SQL Server
2005 before you can apply SP2". As I am not able to install SQL Server 2005
in the first place, any ideas how I proceed?

You must have SQL 2005 SP2 in order to properly run and use SQL Server 2005
on Vista.
The latest CTP is available at www.microsoft.com/sql

When trying to install the Database Services component of SQL Server 2005
onto a PC running Vista Ultimate, I get the following error message:
SQL Server Setup could not connect to the database service for server
configuration. The error was: [Microsoft][SQL Server]Login failed for user
'sa'. Refer to server error logs and setup logs for more information.
The SQL server service is being run with the Local System account. The PC
is not in a domain. Mixed mode authentication was selected.
I have scoured the Internet for a solution but all leads so far have
proven
fruitless. Please can anyone help.
