Finally resolved the problem - it was a firewall issue with local loopback.

Following your advice, I looked at the information on this page
It states "You must first install the full release version of SQL Server
2005 before you can apply SP2". As I am not able to install SQL Server 2005
in the first place, any ideas how I proceed?
