Thanks Andrew I'll look into those products. I have a feeling that
compression on this data won't accomplish much. The raster data
imagery is compressed when loaded into the database by the GIS (ESRI)
software.

Yes you can by specifying multiple devices in your Backup command. They must
all be of the same type but can have different physical locations on disk.
But with something like that I would HIGHLY recommend using one of the 3rd
party tools to do compression and multiple files such as:
www.red-gate.com or www.quest.com
Your backups will be much smaller and take less time.

We have a aerial photo database that has grown to 1TB in size. The
backup file has out grown the space available. The hardware folks are
adding a new LUN but it is less than 1TB in size. But there is
additional space on another LUN. Is there a way to write the backup
to multiple destination files with size limitations?
BTW, this is SQL Server 2000
.
