I haven't seen a how-to on a manual uninstall for SQL 2005. Have you tried
to go to the services applet in Control panel and change the service to a
valid account with local admin privs on the box? That may allow you to
start the service enough to run the uninstall.

Morning Geoff,
Thanks for the quick reply and I appreciate the help, but that procedure
won't work. When the transformation was made to active directories, the
owners of those services (old instances I am trying to get rid of) ceased
to
exist and therefore the selective uninstall fails with a fatal error. I
have gone into the Config Manager and tried to change the owner from a
defunct local owner to a domain owner (assuming if the service was owned
by
a real account then the selective uninstall would work). When I try to do
this Config Manager gives me a "No mapping between account name and
security
ID's was done [0x80070534]" and the owner won't change. Same thing
happens
when I try to shift ownership to Network Services. My bet is, if I can
map
the service to legitimate account, the uninstall will work.
Alternatively,
is there another way to just plain blow away the instance from the back
end?? Thanks for your help. Best,
David

SQL 2005 uninstall through Control Panel : Add\Remove programs. Eachdomain,
instance is a separate entry in the list.

Good morning,
I am installing SLQ Server 2005 (standard edition) on a Windows Server
2003
R2 system. When I was configuring the system I made the mistake of
installing SQL Server and then making the system a domain controller.
When
I tried to unistall SQL server, some of it was removed, but the
original
named (I used named rather than default instance) instance and several
associated services remained on the system. After setting up the
timeI
reinstalled SS 2005 with a domain ownership account and it works fine;
however, the old named instance still tries to start. Could someone
please
tell me how to get rid of it. I can remove the instance registration
manually using the Management Studio, but it just reappears the next
I
reboot my system. Thank you very much!
David
