Hi Johna,
SQL Server has two authentication mode: Windows Authentication mode and
Mixed Authentication mode. You needn't have to assign an user local
administrator permission. Any local user or domain user can access SQL
Server however he need to be assigned more sql server permissions to
execute query , DML operations and manage the sql server.
