cannot get started

I installed VS 2005 on Vista. SQL Express installed along with it but I can't seem to do anything with it.

- I downloaded the SQL Management Studio but the installation failed with an "unexpected error." The error code is 29506.

- When I open the computer management mmc, I get SQL Server Configuration Manager snap-in error.

- When I attempt to create a Database project in Visual Studio and connect to localhost the connection fails. I get an error referring to the inability to created a named pipe. I enabled Named Pipes in the configuration manager (seemed like a reasonable thing to do) but that didn't help.

Where do I go from here? I would like to create a database and start using this. Should I uninstall/reinstall SQL Express? The service is running.
