Hello, I'm a newbie here, so please forgive me if the following seems a
little simplistic. My question concerns the installation and setup of SQL
Server 2005 and Reporting Services.
Microsoft seem to advise against having a SQL Server and IIS on the same
machine, therefore I have a network where SQL server and IIS are on
separate
machines (in addition, the machines I have aren't that powerful, so this
makes sense anyway). However, during the SQL Server 2005 Installation, it
seems that IIS is required on the local SQL box in order to Install /
Configure / Run Reporting Services. This has left me confused, and I was
wondering if someone could address and clarify the following.
1) Does IIS need to be installed on the same machine as SQL server, in
order
to Install / Configure / Run Reporting Services (and am I correct in that
this goes against recommended good practice)?
2) Can IIS be installed on a separate machine to SQL Server (but on the
same
Network naturally), and still be able to Install / Configure / Run
Reporting
Services, and if so, how?
I am running Windows Server 2003 on all machines, and all boxes are on a
Network consisting of separate PCs for Domain Controller, SQL Server 2005,
and IIS 6.
If anyone has the time, this sort of leads in to 2 follow up questions.
3) I read somewhere IIS should be installed locally on a machine with
Visual
Studio 2005 installed in order to maximise the design features available?
Again, is this correct for Visual Studio 2005, or can IIS be installed on
a
separate box?
4) There seems to be a fair bit of comment, but little consensus from what
I
can find, on the best / most secure etc, way to have SQL Server
communicate
with IIS on separate boxes. Is there any definitive setup / method for
achieving this?
I appreciate I have covered quite a wide area with these questions, but
any
direct help, guidance, or references to material that may help, would be
greatly appreciated.
