Re: MSDE to SQL 2K Eval (Headache)

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

I'm not a setup expert but I don't think upgrading from MSDE to Eval is
possible. Your best bet is probably to install eval as a named instance and
the use detach and attach to move the database over but this will require
changing the connection string to point to the new instance. If this isn't
practical then you will need to uninstall MSDE and install Eval. The
database won't be affected and can be attached after EVal is installed. If
you have logins specified in MSDE you will need to recreate them in the new
Eval instance. Maybe a setup expert will respond with a better alternative
but this will work. If it was me, I would take one more shot at deleting
unused data before I did this.

Hello,

Our company is running MSDE to handle our DB. Today, without warning,
the application stopped working. We found out that we hit the wall
with MSDE and are over the 2GB limit.

Figures that this happens at 3:30pm on a Friday. I will not be able to
get a formal copy of SQL 2000 until Monday of this coming week. In the
mean time, we cannot receive or process orders despite attempting to
purge old entries (to get back under 2GBs).

In the mean time, Microsoft sales advised that I could download the 120
day trial of SQL2000 and it would function as the full version until we
could get a serial number and properly activate it. This is fine and
good, except when I got to install SQL2000 the box for "Upgrade,
remove, or add components to existing instance of SQL Server" is
mysteriously grayed out. According to our application vendor, using
the upgrade is the proper way to move from MSDE to SQL 2000.

Can anyone think of a reason why this box is missing? Is it because we
are tryin to install with the Eval Copy? Does anyone know of an
alternative to move this information over and get things running? Or
best yet... does anyone know of a place that I can purchase a copy of
SQL2000 and download immediately?!

Thanks for any help. Definitely appreciated!
