Dave,
It's an unfortunately common situation.
The best way to get out of it is to never get into it. For anybody
else stumbling on this thread read the uninstall information CAREFULLY
BEFORE beginning an uninstall of earlier SQL Server 2005 and/or
Visual Studio 2005 builds. Uninstall order is very important.
If you have SQL Server 2005 September CTP, there is detailed uninstall
information there.
Backup anything important before attempting the following.
With you having had failed previous attempts and then partially
re-installing an old build I suggest you do the following:
1. Attempt to uninstall all SQL Server 2005 and/or Visual Studio 2005
components as per the uninstall order in the documentation. Very
possibly you will still be left with some crud despite your best
efforts.
2. Take a look in C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework and delete
folders named v2.x.xxxxx. DO NOT delete v1.0 or v1.1 folders.
3. Also manually delete folders under C:\Program Files which relate to
SQL Server 2005.
4. Obtain msicuu2.exe from
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;290301. Use it
to remove anything that relates to SQL Server 2005 and/or Visual
Studio 2005 (read the Sept CTP uninstall information for a list of
relevant items). Any cleanup tool can cause problems as well as solve
them so read and think carefully before clicking.
5. Hopefully, you will now have removed all crud and be able to carry
out an install of Sept CTP. I guess we are very close to RTM now but
actual availability of RTM is still unclear as far as I am aware.
The other option, which may be very unpalatable, is to wipe the HD and
start again. It's what I have done for most SQL Server 2005 installs
in order to avoid some of the problems when moving from build to
build.
Good luck.
