The resolution steps in this article did not work for me. I did however
find an answer to the problem I was encountering....
During the installation of SQL SP4 I also received the error: "Error
running script: replsys.sql(1)"
The file replsys.out had a different message: "Login failed for user
USERNAME. Reason: Server is in
single user mode. Only one administrator can connect at this time."
I was able to resolve my issue my shutting down the application that
uses the SQL database. The MS KB article
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=905262 helped me to determine my
problem.
The application must have been trying to connect to the SQL database
while the scripts were attempting to run. Once the application was
shutdown, the scripts ran successfully and SP4 installed without an
error.
It should also be noted, before I found the resolution, even though the
script error was generated , the version information on the database
instance reported SP4 after a reboot. I thought this was odd since the
scripts did not run, and install error was generated, but the database
appeared to be at SP4.
