Hi vivaldi ,
I’m afraid it’s not possible to install either the SQL Server standard or
professional edition or your XP desktop.
Only de SQL server desktop engine or the SQL Server Developer edition can be
installed on an XP laptop.
The SQL Server Developer is available through MSDN subscriber downloads but
this does require and MSDN subscription. If you don’t have one you might want
to take a look at the SQL Server Desktop Engine. This one is available as a
free download from Microsoft but it is severely limited and comes without any
GUI and tools (such as the SQL Server enterprise manager, Query analyser
etc). You can however connect to a SQL Server desktop Engine using an
existing enterprise manager installation.
So if you already have the client tools installed for managing a different
SQL server and you only need basic SQL Server functionality you might want to
check out the Desktop engine.
(But I really recommend that you use the SQL Server developer edition, it’s
really that much more complete.
P.s also note that you are not allowed to install the SQL Server client
tools just for the purpose of using them to manage a desktop engine.
I hope this info helps,
Kind regards,
Leon Krancher
