Migrating SQL Server 7.0 to SQL Server 2000

We are preparing to upgrade from SQL Server 7 SP4 to SQL Server 2000
SP4. We currently have 3 servers with pull merge replication for one of
the dbs that is on all 3 servers. There are some additional dbs as well
that are only on one server each. We will be moving to 2 new servers (1
publisher and 1 subscriber) and upgrading one of the old servers
(remote subscriber). We had been planning to install SQL 2000 SP4 on
the 2 new servers for testing, then just copy/restore the live dbs when
we go live. The third server we were planning on doing an in-place
upgrade to SQL 2000 SP4.
However, I have read that restoring a SQL 7 db directly onto SQL 2000
SP4 will cause the replication settings to be lost. I'm pretty sure
we'll have to drop all of the subscriptions/publications before we can
upgrade, but will we also have to disable replication completely on all
servers before we can do the upgrades/copies, then completely re-setup
replication after we've upgraded?
If we do have to disable/remove replication completely, I'm guessing we
should do 2 sets of backups, one before starting anything, and another
after having removed replication.
Any ideas/hints/advice are appreciated.
Thanks,
Peter
