MSDE Instances, SP4, etc.

I am new to SQL/MSDE and am looking for a little clarification on a few
things...
I am running a number of applications on Windows 2003 that require an
SQL backend. It is sort of a management/utility server so I'm not
terribly concerned with performance, etc. so it's not worth upgrading
this particular box to fully licensed SQL.
What I am having a hard time understanding is the difference between
separate databases and separate instances and how these factor into the
limmitations of MSDE. For example, I am running the following apps:
- MS Operations Manager
- MS Automated Deployment Services
- Dell IT Assistant
- Diskeeper Administrator
All of these require MSDE/SQL and some of them setup there own instance
of MSDE when they are installed. Others seem to be content with the
"Default" instance.
what is the difference between having multiple DB's under one instance
and having multiple instances?
Does the 5 connection limit apply to each instance or the server as a
whole?
Are there any major problems with running so much on one server, even
though I don't care a/b performance?
Are there certain things I can do with the databases, instances, or
individual apps that would ensure smooth operation or optimize
performance? (I do have access to Enterprise Manager to administer
them)?
I have tried like heck to upgrade the MSDE installs to SP4 but haven't
been successful. Does anyone have any insight or experience with these
particular apps?
Thanks!
