Installation freeze - SQL2000 Eval on Server2003 Enterprise 64bit

I am a newbie to SQL and I am really struggling. I have a Dell PowerEdge 7250
Server with 3 Intel Itanium processors and 8GB RAM. I have successfully
installed Windows Server 2003 Enterprise 64-bit as well as Service Pack 1.
I have downloaded the SQL Server 2000 Evaluation from Microsoft and I have
tried to install it. I also tried to install SQL Server 2000 Developer
Edition and I get the same problem.
The install runs fine through the steps and after it copies all the files to
the harddrive it displays the message "Setup is starting the server and
installing your chosen configuration". At this point the installation just
freezes up/suspends. I have twice left it like that for more than 12 hours
without any change.
I then have to go into Task Manager and End/Kill the Setup application and
process. At this point I do not have any Menu items like Enterprise Manager.
When I run SQL Setup again and do an Upgrade and Add other SQL Components it
goes through all the steps and copies the files to the harddrive and finish
with no problems. After this process I have a new Menu Group for SQL Server
with Enterprise Manager, etc.
At this point I still can not start the MSSQLSERVER Service. I get the
message "The MSSQLSERVER service on Local Computer started and then stopped".
The Event Log shows that a Start control message was sent, but it Stops again
immediately afterwards.
When I start Enterprise Manager and look under SQL Server Groups, there is
nothing. When I try to do a New SQL Server Registration, I get the Error
Message "DELLDEMOSERVER - SQL Server does not exist or access denied.
ConnectionOpen(Connect()).
