Maintenece Plan - sequence & timings: best practice

I have just taken over the responsibility of backup and maintenance of our
sql server 2000 DB's and have very limited sql experience. I understand how
maintenance plans work and am setting one up. The DB has almost no overnight
activity so I will schedule everything overnight. The main DB is 5GB and is
full recovery mode. Currently tlog's are backed up every two hours from 6:00
AM to Midnight. and full database backup is only weekly (the previous person
thought the sql database was being caught on tape with normal backup). I am
have a complete maintenance plan with backup to disk every night (before the
tape backup) which will be put on tape. Is there a best practice "sequence"
to have maintenance plans run?
If I set a sql backup direct to tape that would run at 4:00 PM (so that
someone could take an updated daily tape out of the office) will this
overwrite or append to tape. I don't see any choices in sql backup.
Thanks in advance for your reply.
