I agree with Mike.
Starting msde sp3a, we insisted that sa has a strong password. But as Mike
said, I ALWAYS recommend turning off 3rd party services and processes
before doing any kind of install or Service pack upgrade. (I presume you're
installing MSDE+sp3a which is the one available off our website
microsoft.com/sql.
To put it another way - here's a quick checklist of the services and
processes that are ok have running during instalation. ***THEY DONT NEED TO
BE RUNNING. IF ANY BELOW ARE STOPPED, YOU DONT NEED TO START THEM! This is
the minimum set, and we know for a fact that these dont interfere in SQL
setup.
Services -
Alerter
ClipBook Server
Computer Browser
Directory Replicator
Event Log Messenger
Net Logon
Network DDE
Network DDE DSDM
NT LM Security Support Provider
Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Locator
Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Service
Schedule
Server
Spooler
UPS
Workstation
Processes
csrss.exe, Explorer.exe, llssrv.exe, loadwc.exe, lsass.exe, nddeagnt.exe,
pstores.exe, RpcSs.exe, services.exe, smss.exe, spools.exe, System, System
Idle Process, taskmgr.exe, winlogon.exe
All the others, I'd advise you turn off! And this is ONLY DURING the
upgrade/install process! Turn them back on asap after that, especially
something as crucial as an anti-virus!
HTH,
Cheers and happy Holidays,
