Sorry to hear that Lionel...that would be very frustrating.
Incomplete installs are generally caused by running an MDAC
update while some of the MDAC dlls are in use.
Try running component checker against the expected version
of MDAC 2.8 SP1 on Windows XP SP2
It's the second option when you run and then select this
version in the drop down.
Then check if the mismatch fields column is populated for
various components. Sometimes you have to manually replace
the appropriate files but you'd want to be very careful when
doing this and make sure you are copying the correct files
over to the box. You may also find the following article
