Hi Mingqing,
Thanks for getting back so quick. Here are some clarifications for you;
1) All these machines were brand new Windows XP Pro boxes with MS Office
preinstalled from the OEM. Some were litterly just taken out of the boxes so
I know we're not dealing with some obscure setting change or nasty
distructive program.
2) Yes, MDAC 2.8 was installed prior to kicking off our MSDE setup. We
even ran it manually a second time eventhough the install package does it
also.
3) We install MSDE with default language settings. All these computers were
sold to customers in the US. I didn't check language settings for Windows
but I can't imagine finding anything but default English settings.
4) We did not try stopping the BCM instance of SQL before uninstalling it
Some more info; The setup fails in the begining with an ODBC error stating
"cannot connect to database or access denied". Like I said in the last
email, it's happened under this exact scenerio about 5 times in August. Each
time, removing BCM solved the problem. I didn't really dig too far into this
yet because it seemed to be such a clear problem of some kind. I decided to
just post this message to see if others have started running into this yet.
Are you saying MS has not heard of this yet and you can't recreate this
problem on your end? If that's true then I'm stumped because we're not doing
anything special other then using the standard MSDE MSI package with some
command line switches. Here's our command line for the setup.exe
SETUP.EXE /qb /L*v C:\SQLSETUP.log INSTANCENAME=SchoolLeader
SECURITYMODE=SQL BLANKSAPWD=1 DISABLENETWORKPROTOCOLS=0 /Wait
After the installation completes we do some sophisticated proessing with DMO
to get it all configured and locked down for our needs. However, we don't
get passed the initial MSDE setup step.
Hope that gives you further insight.
Thanks,
Mike
