Hello Randal,
Thanks for your patience.
Please follow these steps to reinstall the MSDE
1. Stop BackupExec, DTC, IIS Admin, Intel
2. Use blank SA pswd; BLANKSAPWD=1
3. Please make sure that the "server" Service is running on the NT Box or
else the MSDE installtion will fails as per following KB
You Cannot Install MSDE 2000 if the Server Service Is Not Running
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;829386
4. Use the Verbose log option to capture the setup log,
e.g. Setup.exe /L*v c:\temp\msdestp.log
5. If the install still fails, Please post the msdestp.log (in above step)
and we would be able to see whats going on. Is this box a pdc/bdc by any
chance ?
Thanks for using MSDN Managed Newsgroup.

The steps to recreate are as follows:
1. Start with a fresh NT4 workstation where a network card is present, but
no drivers/protocols are installed.
2. Apply sp6a
3. Install IE6.
4. From the msde2000a directory, issue the following command from a
command prompt: setup SAPWD="abc"
The installation goes almost to completion, then immediately rolls back.
Incidentally, I have also noticed that MSDE hangs on some configurations
(Currently testing on windows 98) The problem is similar to another user
that was directed to article 824042. This seemed to solve his issue, but
he was launching MSDE from another application. I find this behaviour
occurs even when the MSDE setup is launched from the command line. In a
nutshell: setupre.exe stops responding, and when this process is killed,
the setup completes without incident. Any thoughts?
