It depends on what you are gonig to put into each instance. You need to capacity plan and size every database on every instance, and then estimate the growth for each database. Always over-guess to make room for the future. Having 4 instances on one box seems quite a lot to me, and sounds like you would need at least a 4-processor box - however a single or dual box might be fine - depends on usage.

Sorry for the vague answer - this situation requires lots of planning and testing.
