installing *.mdf file and access is denied?

Hello
We maintain a system, which we backup by copying the *.mdf file (sql
server some unknown older version).
The idea has been so far, that whenever needed, we would stop the
server service, copy the file, and start the server again.
The system crashes now and then, and the we restore a backup and it
works from there, though some data is lost.
For varuious reasons, I made a copy of the present file, and
reinstalled a file from 2006, and restarted the service. After that we
have not been able to log in (it is an SQL server, with a 2 GB limit,
with one db only (one MDF file) with a password).
We cannot log in, and trying without a password it says "not a
trusted....". The error when usign username and password was lost due
to late work...
I tried to reinstall another old copy (a single file is not that
important), then the original. I can still not log in.
Any ideas?
We have suggested a backup system for years.
