You don't need a Backup Agent to back up SQL Server. You can just use the
native backup to backup the files to disk and use the backup software to
backup those files to tape. Not all backup agents support log backups (or at
least not in the standard version), so that is a major limitation.
Native backup combined with a typical tape backup has worked fine for me.
