Sue, that was it!
Originally, I didn't use the Enterprise Manager to change the account; I set the account through the Computer Management, Services. I just swapped both services to run as Local System account, and then changed it to the domain account I wanted through the SQL Enterprise Manager. You can see the additional privileges being assigned to the account (Policy Change events in the Security Log). Note that it didn't work right away, but after the reboot, I had no problems setting the SQL Agent Proxy Account to the account I wanted.
