Hi, Mike. I am attempting to accomplish the same task. How did this work
out for you? Thanks.

Thanks Hilary. I can't afford to fail the system over unless absolutely.
essential, so I'll try the standby first. Thanks for the help.

The recommendation is to apply the sp/hot fix to the standby, then to the
primary. There are two ways of doing it, apply to the primary, then
failover, apply to the secondary. The other way is to apply to the
secondary, then apply to the primary without failing over. You should apply
to the monitor server at the same time.
I don't have specific knowledge if you can ship to one server running sp3
and another running sp4, but it should be ok.

Can anyone tell me if I can apply SP4 to a standby server while the
primary
server stays on SP3?
Unfortunately, the standby database is in the same instance as the Test
system. I'd like to run the Service pack on the Test system before
applying
it to the production database (the log shipping primary server).
Note that applying SP4 for us also requires a Collation change.
If not, would it work to move the standby database to a separate named
instance on the Test server - could I then patch / upgrade it
independantly
of the Test database?
Any advice appreciated.
