I can't comment on why this has happened with the upgrade. It is unusual to
see these messages however. I would stop SQL Server agent to see if this
fixes the problem (there could be rogue pull distribution agents running).
Then I would start it up SQL Server agent and see if I can't identify the
problem agents in query analyzer using the sp_who2 command and profiler.
For the problem with the retention period of expiring subscribers, check
that the history retention period is the same as the subscription retention
period.

Recently, all of my SQL 2000 Servers O/S were upgraded (new install) to
Win 2003. Ever since, I am having a couple of problems with most of
the subscriptions.
The first is....
'Another distribution agent for the subscription(s) is running.'
I have researched this error/message and have discovered that if I end
DISTRIB.EXE, this would fix this problem. Well when you are managing
one server this is not a problem, but in my case, it is not easily
done. So my question is....why is this happening?? All the
replication jobs, both publications & subscriptions were recreated
after the the OS was installed.
The second is....
'The subscription has not been synchronized within the maximum
retention period or it has been dropped at the Publisher. You
must reinitialize the subscription to receive data. The step failed.'
Why is this happening all of a sudden?? How do I verfiy the retention
period on the publications?
ANIA,
Larry...
