It isn't just that Celko is "harsh", which is bad enough especially when it
is against noobs on the forum which then causes them to not use this VERY
valuable resource further. It is more that he repeatedly gives
BAD/WRONG/INAPPROPRIATE advice on this MICROSOFT SQL SERVER SPECIFIC FORUM.
This forum isn't about Oracle, DB2, standards, cross-platform development.
If it WERE dedicated to the latter two topics, then a good bit of the actual
knowledge he espouses here might actually be helpful (without the
pontification).

I'm amazed at the fact that a lot of you are hung up over the fact
that Celko can be a bit harsh at times(understatement? possibly);
you'd think for SQL Server MVPs and professionals we presume most of
you are that you'd be less inclined to flaming someone on a public
forum even if they do a bit themselves. If I was a 3rd party wanting
some DB consultant and did a search on your name and found it attached
to posts on here I'd stay away from you plain and simple.
Granted, Celko can be harsh to newbies and DB Pros alike, but I've
worked with SQL Developers like Celko and getting worked up with them
makes them act even worse. I think he just gets annoyed someone asks
to get their problems solved here sometimes when a quick web search
will give you a whole host of information to play with. All people can
have their heads stuck where the sun don't shine (including me) every
once in a while.

You just have to remember that for every DB problem out there,
everyone has a slightly differing opinion and way of solving it and
everyone has a different way of doing things. Some better, some worse,
and some that it wouldn't matter.
Didn't your mother's ever tell you not to say anything at all if you
can't say anything nice at all? How about don't throw stones in glass
houses? :o)

Now back to the original thread.....
Britain sucks for SQL; I live smack bang in the middle of the UK away
from the 2 or 3 main places where SQL events take place so I don't
attend or get to them - and not living in the apparent 'center of the
universe' called London, it's hard to get to them. I'm a busy boy
eitherway so not sure I'd even have time once I got sports and the gf
sorted!
As for books; I spend about £50-100 ($80-$160) per year on them but do
get my work to get some now.
