I'll elaborate for you. The report server lives on the same server as the database server, so the 1MM rows never reach the wire -- only the report.. Remote clients request reports and not rows. <<
How much of that mixed server work is doing done on VM Ware. et al
today? The outfit I worked with had separate hardware for the servers
and really, really fast connections between them. That was more a
matter of history than planning.
What interested me was a proposal they had for an analytic server. It
would be a box with floating point hardware and a honking big SSD.
That kind of specialized hardware is not something you could
virtualize effectively in software.
