Peter,

  I should have searched the archives before posting... I found many
posts about this, including the one copied below from Dan Doris
[Microsoft] a couple of years ago. Maybe the suggestion here will
help. If I had to guess, I'd say that this bug just hasn't been
considered serious enough to "make the cut" and be addressed. If you
can't make the workaround work, let us know.

Thanks for reporting this, i'll open a bug on this as i can repro this. A
suggestion if you want to work around the problem will be check @@error and
test it to see if is non-zero as the return value when an invalid handle is
passed into sp_xml_removedocument.
