I don't think the implementation details of the database tier should be a
big concern for an operation of your size. Concentrate on finding a vendor
that offers the functionality, value and ROI you need and the service and
support package to back it up. The hardware costs you mentioned can only be
looked at in the context of the overall costs of implementation and
ownership. If the sales people are pushing features like the package's use
of SPs as a serious value proposition then maybe you aren't asking them
enough tough questions about the things that really matter. That's my
opinion.
