The developer edition would work if you have it. If you just want to demo your app, then MSDE (the desktop engine) is probably all you need. Keep in mind that MSDE does not ship with any GUI management tools. You will have to use osql.exe.
By the way, you did not have to pepper your question in each of the newsgroups. If you felt that you needed to post it to all newsgroups, simply put each newsgroup in the "to" line in your newsreader. That prevents 10 people from answering your 10 questions in 10 newsgroups. It also allows you to go to one [newsgroup] for answers to your question.
